About the Program

Do you want a versatile career that can let you travel the waters and expand your career opportunities? Try our Maritime Vessel Operations program! This boot camp style program is held at the Port of Everett and led by the Maritime Institute. It allows students to become fully credentialed and professionally trained mariners!

Students who successfully complete the program will be qualified to join any US Merchant Vessel at the entry level & will be internationally certified. Maritime students will learn the ins and outs of the vessel including above and below deck and how the ship operates. Some of the skills that will be learned include engine room familiarization, personal survival techniques, watchkeeper/navigation training, vessel security, maritime electrical systems, outboard engine maintenance, diesel/gas and electrical engine maintenance, as well as maritime plumbing. Students will learn to work collaboratively, learning what it takes to be aboard a vessel for prolonged periods of time. They will also cover basic firefighting skills to ensure they are well equipped for any fires that could happen aboard a vessel.

Due to this program being ran as a satellite program held at the Port of Everett, students must provide their own transportation to and from the program daily. There will be no bus transportation to the Port of Everett. This program is a continuation option for students that have already completed a Sno-Isle TECH program during their junior year and have successfully passed that program with a grade of C or better. Students must also be able to meet Coast Guard regulations, as the Maritime program follows Coast Guard curriculum. Maritime students must also be turning 18 during the year of taking the Maritime Vessel Operations program.

My name is Brian Hennessy, and I’m the Instructor for the Maritime Vessel Operations program here at Sno-Isle TECH. I also serve as the Regional Manager for the Maritime Institute in the Pacific Northwest. The Maritime Institute is a professional training organization with facilities across the country, helping mariners continue their education and advance in their careers.

Before I began teaching, I spent 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving both at sea as an engineer and law enforcement officer, and ashore as a marine inspector and casualty investigator. Those experiences gave me firsthand knowledge of the skills and teamwork it takes to succeed in the maritime industry.

In this program, students will get hands-on training with shipboard systems, firefighting, survival techniques, navigation, and more—building the foundation they need to start a career on the water. What’s exciting is that graduates won’t just walk away with entry-level maritime credentials—they’ll already be connected with the Maritime Institute, giving them a clear path to future courses and certifications as they move up the ranks.

I look forward to introducing students to this challenging and rewarding field, and helping them discover just how far a career at sea can take them.

Welcome aboard!
